Digital Advance Timing CDI

These are intelligent CDI's using variable-advanced timing where the firing angle is varied according to the engine RPM in order to maximise both the power output as well as the engine efficiency. The idea is to optimise both price and performance using microcontrollers. This method of ignition may be used for both two stroke as well as four stroke type of engines. The flowchart outlines the basic design. The pick up coil for this type of system is typically mounted about 30 degrees before Top Dead Center (TDC). Input from the pick up coil is delayed by software so that the engine will perform normally. The delay is typically set at between 5 - 17 degrees BTDC. The input from the signal conditioning circuit is taken in by the microcontroller and unit calculates both the engine RPM as well as the required firing angle. Additional inputs like throttle sensing may be combined for decision making. The output of the microcontroller fires the SCR directly. Typical variable dwell angle firing is between 27 degrees to 5 degrees BTDC. Further features like RPM lock can also be provided.
